Making a difference

I’m sure you’ve heard the story of the man throwing the starfish back into the ocean that was asked why he was doing it. How can it matter with millions of starfish coming ashore every day. His well spoken words were, “it matters to one starfish” at a time. Although the accountant may not be saving the world from villains, they can save one business owner at a time.

You as the accountant may be the first one to see and understand that the business is having trouble or is heading for trouble. The information from the financial statements could be life-saving when communicated to the business owners in a timely fashion. This communication can be a real wake-up call.

You can outline a process to follow for stabilization of the business and help the small business owner make decisions that can lead to better profitability. Communication of that information and recommendations in an effective way is critical in establishing and enhancing the relationship with the business owner. Not letting the business owner know of the potential problems you see is like seeing a torpedo heading for you ship, then going back to sleep.

You can be a real help to the business owner with focused analysis of the problems facing the business and with sound recommendations as to how to solve the problems he is facing. Your information and your perspective may be the most objective perspective of the business. You can make a difference.
