Drug Abusers Need Not Apply
Ten years ago, Universal Accounting Center staff consisted of myself, my brother Ken, and Beth, a part-time office worker. Today, we have over 50 people employed here. That’s a sign of positive successful growth, but it also introduces issues never considered before, such as the possibility of drug abuse among staff.
I can tell you, with full confidence, that Ken and I never used drugs illegally. Neither had Beth. Although I’m quite comfortable that our current staff is drug-free, I can’t say that with the same level of assurance. So, we recently instituted drug testing among our employees.
I hope that we don’t learn of any illegal drug use among our terrific team, but I’m not so naive to believe it can’t happen here. A few months ago, we learned with one employee that looks and actions can be deceiving. The moment we found out about the person’s use of illegal drugs, we let the employee go and will do the same if we find illegal drug use among any of our current staff.
Our Company feels being drug free is not only a personal safety and health issue, but also a financial protection for our customers. If we were to tolerate it, we would be endangering the lives of our employees and become a security risk for those with whom we do business. Furthermore, we’d be in essence hanging out a sign to other drug abusers that we welcome them. That would be just plain stupid.
